Shaping thinking on health care policy initiatives

The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare was considering plans to introduce European-style referencing pricing. It was expected that such a measure would bring about a long-term reduction in pharmaceutical spending and thus in overall healthcare costs.

We worked with our Japanese client to develop arguments that demonstrated the limitations of this approach to cost-containment. Our understanding of the German and Dutch referencing pricing experience coupled with our extensive expertise on the impact of government price controls, allowed us to craft powerful arguments that positioned our client to actively oppose this measure.

Reference pricing was eventually rejected by the Japanese government.
